Perpetual vs. Subscription Licenses

Beginning with the release of v9, Smaart will be offered via two different licensing options.

  • ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION LICENSES

    Annual Subscription Licenses are available for the following v9 Editions:

    Smaart Suite

    Smaart RT

    Smaart LE


    An Annual Subscription License allows you to use Smaart for a period of one year.


    Annual Subscription Licenses are paid for in-full at the time of purchase and will auto-renew each year for an additional one year subscription unless cancelled prior to the end of the current subscription period.

    As long as your Annual Subscription License remains active and the annual subscription fees have been paid, Rational Acoustics will provide support, including updates/bug fixes within the same version and edition of the Software, at no additional charge.

    Annual Subscription Licenses cannot be upgraded/downgraded to different editions of Smaart within the current subscription period.  If you wish to change to a different edition of Smaart, you can cancel your current subscription and purchase a new
    subscription for a different edition.

    All Annual Subscription Licenses are 1-install only and additional installs cannot be added to Subscription Licenses. A separate Annual Subscription License must be purchased for each computer you wish to run Smaart on.

    Annual Subscription Licenses require an internet connection for initial activation and a periodic internet connection for license validation and renewal. If not, your software may cease to function.

  • PERPETUAL LICENSES

    Perpetual Licenses are available for the following v9 Editions:

    Smaart Suite

    Smaart RT

    Smaart LE

    Smaart SPL

    Perpetual licensing is the way Smaart has been licensed since it's inception. You purchase a license for your desired version of Smaart and that license does not expire. The license is paid for in-full at the time of purchase, and remains valid indefinitely for the specific edition and version of the software you are licensed for

    Support, including updates and bug fixes, is provided at no cost for the duration of the license as long as the version of Smaart you are licensed for is the most current release. (i.e... if you buy a Smaart v9 perpetual license, you will receive all updates/bug fixes for as long as v9 remains the most current release version).

    Perpetual Licenses can be upgraded to different editions of Smaart within the same version cycle (i.e. upgrading from Smaart RT v9 to Smaart Suite v9), and to subsequent versions upon their release (i.e. upgrading from Smaart Suite v9 to Smaart Suite v10). 

    Perpetual Licenses come with a different number of initial installations available, based on the edition of Smaart you purchase (see chart below). Additional installations can be purchased for Perpetual Licenses, should you need to run Smaart on more computers than your original license allows.

    Perpetual Licenses of Smaart can be activated online or offline. Once activated, an internet connection is not required and Smaart can be operated offline.

LICENSE FAQs

Are there any differences in functionality between perpetual licenses and subscription licenses?

No. Once installed, Smaart functions exactly the same whether it is licensed as a perpetual license or via annual subscription.

How many computers can I run Smaart on under a Perpetual License?

Perpetual Licenses of Smaart Suite and Smaart RT come with 2 installs and Perpetual Licenses of Smaart LE and Smaart SPL come with 1 install. If you need to run Smaart on more computers than your license allows, you can purchase additional installs for a Perpetual License of Smaart v9 (any edition) once the license has been registered to a Smaart License Management account.

How many computers can I run Smaart on under a Subscription License?

All Subscription Licenses are 1-install only. If you wish to run Smaart on more than one computer, you will need to purchase a separate subscription for each additional computer.

Can I own / run Perpetual and Subscription Licenses at the same time?

Sure. You can have any combination of Pepetual and Subscription licenses registered to your Smaart License Management account and deployed across your computers.

Does a Subscription License have a free trial period?

No. Subscription Licenses are billed in-full at the time of purchase. And they are non-refundable. Because of this, we we encourage all potential users to take advantage of our free 30-Day Demo program to try out the software prior to purchase to ensure you are satisfied with Smaart's features and functionalities and that it is fit for your particular purpose.

What happens if I cancel my Subscription License?

You can cancel your subscription any time up to 24 hours prior to the end of the current subscription period and you will not be billed for future subscription periods, but you will not receive a refund for the current
subscription period.

If you cancel your subscription, your Annual Subscription License will remain active, and you will be able to use Smaart, until the end of the current subscription period. Once the subscription period has ended, your Annual Subscription License will expire and Smaart will cease to function.  If you wish to continue using Smaart, you will need to purchase a new Subscription License.

Can I covert a Subscription License into a Perpetual License?

Not directly. If you decide you would prefer a Perpetual License after already starting a Subscription, you can cancel your Subscription License and purchase a Perpetual License of the same (or different) edition of Smaart. But you will not receive a refund or credit for any remaining time on your original Subscription License. So it's best to wait until the end of your subscription period to make the switch.

Can I convert a Perpetual License into a Subscription License?

No. If you have a version of Smaart prior to v9 (which are all by default perpetual licenses), you can upgrade to a perpetual license of Smaart v9. But if you want to change to subscription license of v9, you will need to purchase a new separate Subscription License.

Can I run a Subscription License on a computer that is not connected to the internet?

No. Annual Subscription Licenses require internet connectivity for activation and a periodic internet connection for license validation and renewal. If not, your software may cease to function. For computers that cannot be connected to the internet, we recommend purchasing a Perpetual License which has an offline activation option, and once activated Smaart can be operated offline.

Where can I purchase a Perpetual License?

Once released, Perpetual Licenses of Smaart v9 will be available for purchase via the Rational Acoustics web store, or through any authorized Smaart Distributor or Dealer.

Where can I purchase a Subscription License?

Once released, Subscription Licenses of Smaart v9 will only be available for purchase via the Rational Acoustics web store.
